# GeoNames postal data — CC BY 4.0 (attribution required)

parleml **bundles and redistributes** postal-code extracts derived from the
GeoNames geographical database:

- Files: `ml4/src/parleml_ml4/fe/transformers/data/pgeocode/{US,CA}.txt`
  (and the `*-index.txt` companions)
- Read at runtime via the `pgeocode` library.
- Source: https://www.geonames.org/ (postal-code dataset)

GeoNames data is licensed under the **Creative Commons Attribution 4.0
International (CC BY 4.0)** license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

## Required attribution

Attribution is **mandatory** wherever this data is redistributed — including a
hosted/SaaS deployment. Surface the following notice in the product's
open-source / data-attribution page and in any shipped artifact:

> licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License
> (CC BY 4.0). The data has been processed/reformatted for use in parleml.

## Notes

- CC BY 4.0 permits commercial use and redistribution provided attribution is
  given and any changes are indicated (we reformat the raw GeoNames dump into
  the `pgeocode` `.txt` layout — that constitutes a change to indicate).
- No copyleft: it does not affect the license of parleml's own code.
