# Important notices for users — data, geolocation & optional components This product is built on open-source software. The complete license texts for every bundled component are in the files alongside this folder (`THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md` for Python, `THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES_JS.md` for the web app, and `manual/` for vendored code and bundled data). This page explains, in plain language, the few items that need your attention. --- ## 1. IP geolocation requires a MaxMind GeoLite2 database (you provide it) Some optional features can enrich **IP-address** columns with location and network information (country, city, ISP/hosting, etc.). These features rely on the **MaxMind GeoLite2** City and ASN databases, which **are NOT included** with this product. **Why not?** MaxMind's GeoLite2 license does not allow us to redistribute their databases to you. Each user must obtain their own free copy. **How to enable IP features:** 1. Create a free MaxMind account and download two files — `GeoLite2-City.mmdb` and `GeoLite2-ASN.mmdb` — from (or use MaxMind's `geoipupdate` tool). 2. Put both files in a folder, then point the product at it with the `MAXMIND_DB_DIR` environment variable. For example: - **Local:** set `MAXMIND_DB_DIR=C:\data\maxmind` (Windows) or `export MAXMIND_DB_DIR=/data/maxmind` (Linux/macOS). - **Docker:** mount a volume and set the variable: `docker run -v /host/maxmind:/data/maxmind -e MAXMIND_DB_DIR=/data/maxmind ...` 3. Check it: the column-domain catalogue (`GET /api/describe/domains`, and the help next to the IP domain on a dataset's Columns tab) says whether both files were found. New runs use them; nothing needs reinstalling. If the databases are not present, the IP-geolocation features stay empty (the run says so, and the catalogue says where it looked) — nothing else is affected. **Your responsibility:** when you download and use the GeoLite2 databases, you agree to MaxMind's GeoLite2 End User License Agreement (), including keeping the databases reasonably up to date. This agreement is between you and MaxMind. --- ## 2. Postal-code / location data (GeoNames) Postal-code features use data from **GeoNames** (), licensed under the **Creative Commons Attribution 4.0** license (). This data **is** included with the product. Required attribution: > This product includes data from GeoNames (https://www.geonames.org/), > licensed under CC BY 4.0. --- ## 3. Personal-name reference data Name-based features use a public, openly licensed names corpus to estimate likely country-of-origin, gender probability, and name popularity. No personal data from your datasets is shared externally; the corpus is bundled and used entirely on-device. --- ## 4. Optional AI / embedding features If you enable LLM or text-embedding features, those may call an external service you configure (e.g. your own OpenAI/Azure/LiteLLM endpoint) or download a local embedding model the first time it is used. These are **off by default** and only contact the endpoints you explicitly configure. --- ## Questions For the full, authoritative license terms of every component, see the `THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES*.md` files next to this folder.
